Honoring the life of Bill Coombe

Bill was born May 1, 1927 in Painesdale, MI the son of John and Emma Messner Coombe. He married Corinne Chaput on June 21, 1947 in Atlantic Mine. MI. Mr. Coombe was a graduate of Jeffers High School in Painesdale, MI and received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. He was a registered professional civil engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 35 years retiring in 1985 as Program Manager for the State's Highway Construction Program. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII where he received the American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon. He was a member of the Illinois Association of Highway Engineers, and a founding member of the Springfield Youth Hockey Association. He was inducted into the Springfield Youth Hockey Hall of Fame, and Springfield Sports Hall of Fame as a Friend of Sport. He was a USA Hockey official, a USA hockey coach, the coordinator of off ice officials for the Springfield Junior Blues Hockey Team.
